Movie Review: ‘Drive’ (2011)
Now this movie may not be exactly what you expect from the trailers, it’s not a driving filled action film with cars racing in the streets and flipping over in balls of flames! Its more the dark story of a skilled driver and how his life changes when he falls in love. Director Nicolas Refn is well-known for his love of blood and gore in his movies and when the plot finally picks up after its VERY slow start, Refn gets a lot of chances to use this and does!
Gosling stars as “The Kid” in this one as a driver-for-hire who drives as a part-time movie stunt driver and auto mechanic during the day, and getaway driver for the criminal underworld at night. He quickly falls for his new next door neighbor “Irene” played by Carey Mulligan. This is where the movie SLOWS down as their relationship develops and you keep hoping for anything else to happen! At one point it looks like Gosling is ready to get out of the getaway driver portion of his lifestyle but that all changes when Irene’s husband is released from prison and Irene and her son are put in harm’s way. Irene’s husband quickly finds himself messed up with some bad characters, and Gosling steps in to do one more job to help him settle his debts and help Irene and her son. The storyline speeds up here with a lot of intense action including a lot of blood and gore, but still, little actual driving!
Gosling and Mulligan are outstanding in their roles as is the rest of the supporting cast. Gosling plays the troubled, dark characters well and he pulls it off again in this one. Bryan Cranston plays Goslings old friend and boss “Shannon”, who has had some trouble with some “mob-like” characters played by Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman. Even though they have had some trouble in the past, Shannon keeps running to these guys to help him out and that’s where most the problems originate from.
Overall, this is was good movie with great acting, just don’t go into it expecting all the driving action. It’s quite dark and strange at times but well worth seeing.
