Game News Update for January 21, 2012: 3D Gaming Tablets, RE6 and a Game of… Dwarves?
Ah, January, so many promises… I wonder what the rest of the year will bring. More snow? I’m on the eastern seaboard (US) and we’re getting hammered right now. It’s kind of funny, really, it hasn’t snowed for most of the winter up here. Ah well, it’s not stopping so I might as well get to playing an RPG or twelve… Before I do that, however, I suppose I should tell you what’s been going on in the world of gaming:
First off, have you heard of Skyrim? If not, you’ve been living under a digital rock. Anyhow, what’s happening there? Well, somebody with plenty of patience and skill has created another version of the game for the TI-84 calculator.
You can download it here. Or here, if that link goes dead. Or even here! So I suppose this is what Skyrim might have looked like on the original Gameboy? This version of the game rather reminds me of the original version of The Elder Scrolls, Arena. The game looks pretty simple, but you know what? It’s free. I can’t argue with that.
Anybody remember Mercury Hg? Well Konami will be releasing a rather similar game simply called Puddle on the XBLA and PSN January 25th, and they’ve released some screens for your viewing pleasure- you can take a look at them right here.
The trailer for Unstoppable Gorg has surfaced at long last, it looks like a pretty cool tower defense game:
I’ve been looking forward to it for a while, it sort of reminds me of pulp sci-fi of old, just a little goofier.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you’ve heard of CES, the Consumer Electronics Show. Well, there’s been one gaming tablet I’ve been looking forward to after hearing about it from CES: the Wikipad 3D. There’s a nice hands-on with Androidnext embedded below, take a look!
A tablet with gaming controls, a glasses-free 3D screen and more? I want to get my hands on this bad boy, it launches sometime in March of this year. Looking for more? Gamerlive.tv has released a nice collection of their favorite gaming tablets from CES 2012.
Linux gamer? IGM has put together a nice list of great games for Linux users, definitely useful if you’re looking for something to play. There are the obvious titles (Minecraft) in addition to some slightly more obscure stuff. Check it out!

A couple of days ago I awoke to what sounded like the thunderous applause of millions of fanboys and girls around the world. Surely that could only mean one thing: Resident Evil 6 was just announced. You wanted it and you got it. Capcom recently released a trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil 6 which features even more shootouts, crazy action, zombies, karate and a less steroid induced Chris Redfield. Leon Kennedy makes a return as well as some new faces. The games looks a lot more action oriented than the past two games combined which may or may not work in its favor though it does look fun. I mean who doesn’t want to beat up a zombie with their bare hands? You can look forward to it when the game drops November 20th on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
It was recently announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic cost a whopping $200 million to develop. And from what I’ve seen from the gameplay videos it seems to be money well spent. The game so far has mostly positive reviews and since its release has sold at 2 million copies so if all of those people stay on to play longer than the free month trial Bioware could easily make their money back. Though I’m sure with Mass Effect 3 just around the corner the company is looking to make quite a profit this year. Now if only we could get that Jade Empire 2 out of them.
Kongregate, the popular flash game website, has announced their the first game chosen to be released on the App Store and Android Market is Incredible Ape’s one button game / ESCAPE \. Seriously folks the game literally only uses one button and it is by far one of the most addicting flash games I’ve ever played. Makes you wonder why game developers don’t follow the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) way of development, but maybe I’ll save that for another time. Go play this game if you haven’t already.
Paradox Interactive recently announced that they are developing A Game of Dwarves (oh I see what you did there Paradox, you snake in the grass you). The company mostly develops RTS games for the PC as well as XBLA and PSN. This follow suite thought the focus is on the player controlling dwarves (obviously) as they mine for minerals, build, and research equipment while at the same time defending themselves from all the would attack them. Each dungeon is said to be randomly generated to no trial and error for you my friend. That means you’ll have to come up with new strategies each time you play it. We’ll see how this plays out later in the year when the game is released in the summer.
For those of you who have followed Half Life mods, Dear Esther, a mod from back in 2008 (man that was ages ago) has gotten a complete overhaul and is being released as a separate game on Steam. The game is more or less a ghost story/mystery so the game plays out more like a first-person detective adventure than a horror game. And while there aren’t any gameplay specifics, judging from the trailer I would expect a lot of exploring and clue searching. The game seems to be all about the mystery and letting the player figure things out on their own which sounds great. And looking at the trailer, the environments look awesome and the atmosphere seems to have been nailed. If only I had a computer that wouldn’t explode while trying to play it. You can check out the game when it comes out on February 14th. I mean what better way to spend Valentine’s Day then playing through a ghost story with your significant other.
And if you’re looking for some nonsensical fun to break up your day, a small game developer who goes by ben304 has released a new game called, ^_^ and yes they title is just that, a symbol. But don’t let that turn you away. I’ve had the chance to mess around with the game and it is quite entertaining. The whole purpose is to help Julian the werebunny become human again. The game plays like a simple click and point adventure game and the interactions with some of the characters will get a chuckle out of you every now and then as well as Julian just being able to just about headbutt everything in the environment. Give it a try if you’re looking for a quick pick me up.
