Kickstarter for Flagship, First Person RTS, Now Live
Update: Unfortunately, the Flagship Kickstarter has been canceled.
Some while ago, I stumbled across a game known as Flagship– it wasn’t in a playable state, as it was mostly an idea- but it looked to be a clever one. The game was an RTS (real time strategy in case you’re unfamiliar with the term) from a first person perspective.
Imagine, if you can, being inside a spaceship while directing a space battle- it’s all a bit reminiscent of a wonderful cross between the galaxy-hopping adventures of FTL: Faster Than Light and the pure strategy of a fleet command type game such as the recently released SpaceCom– the game’s developers say that they were also inspired by such games as Sins of a Solar Empire and Total Annihilation while also having been influenced by the likes of Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek.

Personally, I’m pretty excited by this- the idea of being the captain of my own ship sounds fun- but commanding humanity’s fleet as we struggle to survive among the stars? I don’t know if my young heart can handle it. It’s as though somebody out there decided they’d create a game just for me- there are planets to discover, colonies to establish, trade routes to form- Flagship looks like the video game of my imperialistic dreams. The game is being built with native Oculus Rift support- in the Kickstarter video, one of the developers showed off a virtual reality headset he put together himself while waiting for an Oculus Rift- I’m sure this game will be a VR hit.
