Game News Update for December 5, 2011

Game News Update for December 5, 2011

Oh Square Enix, when will you finally bring back Final Fantasy VII? The fans are going mad waiting. http://youtu.be/1QWpiedIX7U At least somebody else is working on a remake with the Unreal Engine. A demo’s already been produced, but I wouldn’t get too excited- the lawyers at Square Enix are probably lubricating the hinges of their briefcases right now. Speaking of Squeenix, they’ve announced a new Final Fantasy title: Brigade. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a social game, sporting an aesthetic rather like the upcoming 3DS Final Fantasy title Theatrythm, that is to say, cutesy. The official website is right... Game News Update for December 2, 2011

The start of December- what a wonderful month gaming just experienced! And mass consumerism in general as the world gears up for the holiday season. As I wince my way through the aisles, trying to block the catchy, irritating jingles from slowly converting my mind to mush, I occasionally reflect on how great this year’s been for me as a writer. Well, that’s enough about me, let’s get down to business! Remember Miner Wars 2081? Well it looks like they’re creating a tie-in game called Miner Wars 2.5D, and it looks pretty interesting. It’s scheduled for a January 2012... Read On

Game News Update for November 28, 2011

What day is it today… Monday, right? Well as you may know, Black Friday was mere days ago, and its successor, Cyber Monday, has arrived. There’s a ton of deals to snag on the internet today through most of the week, and Gizmodo compiled a ton of steals from across the web, check it out right here. One awesome deal? The customizable PS3 bundles at Wal-Mart. What will the next Xbox bring us? Some say greater Kinect integration, with, get this, anger recognition. That’s right- it’s supposed to be able to tell by your expressions and voice how frustrated... Read On

New Handheld Game Console Announced: The GameGadget

New Handheld Game Console Announced: The GameGadget

Well, it looks like there’s a mysterious new contender on the field of handheld gaming: the GameGadget. Set to launch January 2012, there’s really not much information about it aside from a single press release- one that I managed to get my hands on! So, what do we know? Well, the GameGadget is going to be running Linux, and aims to be not only a strong hardware platform, but feature powerful software- software with online integration that could rival the XBLA and PSN, thus making a potential competitor to the upcoming Playstation Vita.In the press release, Jason Cooper, the... Why is the Industry Doing Nothing to Combat Piracy?

Why is the Industry Doing Nothing to Combat Piracy?

I’m not a fan of piracy. Quite frankly, if somebody has the means to legitimately purchase something, be it a physical good or some sort of media, said person should do so. Pirating something you can buy, in my eyes, constitutes theft. So why isn’t the game industry doing anything to stop it? I’m not saying to shut down torrents, The Pirate Bay, or a ton of other file-sharing sites; there’s still plenty of legitimate uses going on there. No, what I’m wondering is why the industry seems bent on punishing legitimate users and driving them towards piracy. Can I... Read On

Game News Update for November 2, 2011

Well, it’s been quite a busy week in the world of gaming- November is a month of many, many releases, presumably in preparation for the great rush of consumerism known as The Holiday Season. Let’s start with Nintendo: They’ve released a trailer for Super Mario 3D Land, a title for the 3DS, and it certainly looks interesting. How much will the new dynamic of 3D change up gameplay? Wait, wasn’t this question asked many, many years ago with the N64? Ah well, check out the trailer, it’s pretty interesting. Also, it seems to come with a firmware update. http://youtu.be/SC5r0OlSXcI... Read On

The Ultimate Battlefield 3 Simulator and What it Could Mean for Gaming

The Ultimate Battlefield 3 Simulator and What it Could Mean for Gaming

Unless you’ve been living under a digital rock, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the game Battlefield 3, or BF3 for short. Well, The Gadget Show, a UK based TV series on technology recently took on the challenge of creating quite possibly the ultimate virtual reality headset. I suppose ‘headset’ doesn’t really apply, neither does ‘suit’, and ‘bodyset’ sounds creepy. Maybe I should refer to it as an ‘epic room’ for the sake of simplicity. Then again, I could just call it the Sim. Using a hacked Kinect, infrared cameras, several projectors, paintball guns, a special treadmill and... Read On

Game News Update for October 24, 2011

As the holiday season grows nearer, so too does a glut of major releases. One of these is Uncharted 3, and it’s earning very, very high scores. Sega has been on something of a remake spree as of late with re-releases of classic titles such as Space Channel 5 Part 2 and Sega Bass Fishing (my review of the latter is coming quite soon) and now, Daytona USA. Coming to the XBLA and PSN this week, it comes with support for the 16:9 display ratio and online multiplayer. There’s been released a brand new trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.... Read On

This code’s good until around January 2012, so nab it now! In other Playstation news, the Vita is coming February 22, 2012 and is available to pre-order right now. Will it be something special? Most likely, and I eagerly await seeing just how things work out. It’s always the little details that separate a console from its competition, those tiny things that make it worth so much more memorable. The... Read On

BNR @ New York Comic-Con 2011: Halo CE, Skyward Sword, and More!

In a plot-twist so shocking, my head still spins, I managed to go to the New York Comic-Con (NYCC). How this happened involves a wonderful librarian, an awesome family and a very friendly man working the ticket counter. As you may guess, this was a completely last minute affair, but with the help of my father I managed to obtain some awesome footage of upcoming games, along with photos and video from within Comic-Con, along with (surprise!) an interview with Jerome Jones of Robot Entertainment, the studio behind Orcs Must Die! So what did I check out? As you... Read On

Why Didn’t I Buy Minecraft Earlier?

Why Didn’t I Buy Minecraft Earlier?

Over the weekend, I purchased the indie blockbuster Minecraft; it didn’t happen a moment too soon.  I regret the fact that I didn’t buy it sooner; I kept running into hiccups along the way, involving various shenanigans, procrastination, and the generalized insanity that makes up my life. But at long last having bought it, I’m satisfied beyond words and intend to review the game once it’s completely finished. So what do I love about it thus far? Well, Minecraft is a game full of opportunity, creative potential, and endless hours of pixelated (voxelated?) fun. But beyond that, it was a... Read On

Hardcore, Casual, and Why I Don’t Care

Hardcore, Casual, and Why I Don’t Care

Video games are a medium. Indeed, they’re one of the, if not the most quickly advancing medium in the history of the world. They also happen to be one of the most controversial, engaging, and exciting. Like any art form, there are masterpieces and disasters, cheap imitators and unique triumphs. There are those who staunchly, stubbornly stand by their favorite works, claiming those they prefer have greater artistic merit than all others. These people refer to themselves as hardcore, choosing to believe that they alone are Real Gamers on a mission from Arcadia to save the world from... Read On

Game Teaser: Rotastic Release Date Announced

Game Teaser: Rotastic Release Date Announced

Rotastic, an upcoming 2D game that prides itself on not taking itself too seriously, is coming the XBLA on September 21, 2011 for 800 Microsoft Points. The game revolves around being revolutionary- in a different way. Players cannot walk, and must instead swing around the world, grabbing treasure and avoiding danger. Physics and gravity are at the heart of the game, alongside an Earthworm Jim-esque sense of humour. The game contains various nods to game and pop culture (an elf named Legalos!) and what looks like pretty unique gameplay. So far, it looks promising. A PS3 and PC version... Read On

Game News: What Happens When the Rain Falls?

Game News: What Happens When the Rain Falls?

I’d simply like to start this article by stating that I have absolutely nothing against cloud computing. In fact, this article is being saved in my Dropbox for easy access. I believe that cloud computing definitely has a viable future, and will be a major force in the tech sector in what will amount to a verybrief period of time. That said, cloud gaming services frighten me. Let me rephrase that: cloud gaming services scare me in much the same way a roller coaster would if you rode it five stories into the air and suddenly, the restraints vanish... Read On

Game Review: Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Game Review: Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

What would happen if Tim Burton directed a remake of Asteroids that had chunks of Super Metroid thrown in? The result would likely be Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, the dark, trippy work of Michael Gagne. You play as a tiny alien commandeering a flying saucer through this vast, dark world, picking up tools, weapons and upgrades. Quite like Metroidvania titles, you’re pretty free to roam the map, visiting any area you’ve opened up, though there are clearly defined goals and destinations. The map system is quite intuitive and easy to use, marking goals and points of interest. Much... Read On
